Choose your outrage

Remember the "Choose Your Own Adventure" books? It's kinda like that...

For the Environmentalist: ANWR Drilling Approved! Who cares about the impact, there's oil in them thar hills!

For the Peacenik: Wolfie Honored! Support dangerously imperialistic policy and when your boss doesn't quit, well we'll find something for ya.

For the Death Penalty Abolisher: Fry That Manure Salesman! Yeah it was only circumstantial evidence, but look at him - he's evil with that smug expression!

Well at least the 'thrax scare turned out to be false

Don’t forget one more event that took place Wednesday! Senator Brownback took control of the Appropriations Subcommittee on the District of Colombia, the subcommittee that essentially sets the rules and restrictions on DC federal funds. In your hometown of DC, your values and your neighbor’s values are potentially about to be tossed aside by Senator Brownback as part of a social experiment in conservative governance.

Brownback believes in applying conservative social policy to the great city of DC, including marriage restrictions, healthcare restrictions and removing gun control. Brownback’s constituents should be DC residents, not conservative extremists. Unfortunately this does not appear to be the case.

Washington DC is a liberal city dependent upon health clinics for the poor, needle exchange programs to help reduce the scourge of AIDS, a growing liberal middle and upper class and a strong gay movement that helps drive this city’s development. Each of these communities potentially will be negatively affected.

From CQ:
“Brownback’s ascension raises the possibility that senators will attach controversial social policy riders to the annual appropriations bill.
For example, the Senate-passed District of Columbia spending bill typically has banned the use of federal funds only for needle-exchange programs while the House-passed version and the final conference report consistently have banned the use of both federal and local money for that purpose.
Some conservatives in both chambers have made it clear they want to alter social policy in the District.
Rep. Jo Ann Davis, R-Va, wants to define marriage in the District of Columbia as a union between and man and a woman, and there are proponents in both chambers of repealing the city’s strict gun ban.”
No funds from the government and part of the DC budget may go to fund abortion services, a legal practice in the United States.
